One might think that because of the progress that we have maid in the area of clothing, we would not look back at our past. Reality, as always, has a way of denying what we all think. First of all, what is old school fashion? Well, it constitutes of fashion coming from 1970s-1980s. Old school fashion is being brought back by fashion conscious young adults and teenagers today. Old school fashion is not only determined by the clothes. Old school fashion is evident in accessories, hairstyles and even in the attitude of the youth today. The question, however, is why? Why is old school fashion coming back?

There are a variety of reasons why people are bringing back old school fashion. First of all, this fascination with the past has started with television. Do you realize that the people who are bringing back old school fashion are the ones who grew up watching reruns of such shows as Happy Days? We are also the same generation who enjoy watching TV shows based on the past such as That 70’s Show.

Come to think of it, we have been exposed so much to old school fashion in other media. Think of the movies: we are the ones who enjoyed watching movies of old shows like Starsky and Hutch, Charlie’s Angels and other movies which have been resurrected from the old death of camp TV to the new life of the cinema.

Well, the media certainly brought about the old school fashion revival. It was the spark that created the fire. The question, however, is what fuels the flames? The truth is, people like old school fashion. It looks good and helps them reconnect with a past which was not as complicated as the world today. The reason why old school fashion is constantly gaining popularity is the fact that once it was reintroduced into society, people found that they actually liked it.

Old school fashion is also very popular because of the fact that there’s just something about it that is so sexy. Old school fashion was designed to show of the beauty of the human body. Fitted shirts and pants, cool patterns and designs, these are the trademarks of a past which young people have not experienced.

Another reason why people think that old school fashion is so cool is the fact that, combined with today’s technology of comfortable fabrics, old school designs can be pretty showy and yet casual at the same time.

So why is old school fashion coming back? Well, some people would see it as a metaphor for us trying to reclaim a past that never really belonged to us. It can also be a metaphor for trying to extract the best things out of the past. You see, when old school fashion was brought into this century, we never really brought all of the bad memories with it. Old school fashion could either be a great example of recapturing the beautiful past or it could be a bad metaphor for selective amnesia. You decide.

18 and off travelling: should I blow all my cash before uni?

My name is Patrick, I’m 18 and on a gap year. I’ve already done a bit of travelling (to South Africa) but that was last year and now I’ve got a lot of things to sort out for 2010, which means a lot of questions, which I was hoping Citywire readers could help me with.travelling

I’m planning on going to Thailand, India and Vietnam. Obviously its no simple task getting visas – I’ve heard that in some cases you have to get them months in advance depending on where you’re travelling to – can anyone offer any advice on how go about sorting this out?

My budget is enough to cover the two projects I plan to work on, which will cost around £700 each, excluding flights. But I’ll be spending a month in Thailand and the same in Vietnam – how much spending money should I have spare? Are there any rules of thumb for budgeting when travelling in Asia?

Travel insurance is another big one – where is the best to go to get it? Any tips?

I have a few concerns about when I return from travelling, besides the obvious anti-climax of not living in paradise… I go to Uni in September but I’ll be coming back from Asia in early August, so I’ll soon be facing the financial pressures of being a student – is it worth me getting a job to try and recover some cash that I will likely blow during fresher’s week? Or should I just make the most of freedom from studying and working while it lasts?

Lots of questions I know. I’d be interested to get your feedback. And while you’re at it, any tips on where to go in the countries I’m visiting?

Not a completely new concept, as a previous couple of markets for breedable pets were based on the Mad Hatter concept with a few good mushrooms too. And of course – a week before Ozimals opened, the other bunny brand – HunnyBunny opened up it’s own mainstore on the Bunnies SIM – and guess what – the Bunnies sim has a mad hatter tea party table out, and there are quite a few mushrooms to sit on around the SIM and mainstore too.

Then there’s Petable Turtles – who a couple of months back produced a new home object which centralises the roaming on turtles, plus makes them non-physical. Yep – it’s a mushroom. The shroom is completely modifiable, so you don’t have to have a shroom, and mushrooms and turtles do seem an odd mix, whereas bunnies and mushrooms seem to go together. Right?

What is it about breedable pets and mushrooms then? It’s something about fairies, fantasy and animals – there’s something going on with the world where we are moving back to stories, fairytales and fantasy. Perhaps our real lives are harsh – what with the wars and recession, economic and ecological problems. But nowhere can we find this return to fantasy more-so than in our Second Lives, where it’s very easy to do, and acceptable too.

The Ozimals SIM has mushrooms of so many types you’re going to have to visit to see. Many were supplied by Fae & Tiny Fantasy Creations at Rainbow Island, who do a mass of mushrooms, houses and fantastical trees. Previous to that I’d discovered a similar fantasy place -  Fae Faire – which has recently brought out a ‘Cartoon It’ range – those trees, a house, silly furniture and sitting mushrooms look like cartoons, with black borders around their outside. Fae Faire House & Garden has a huge abundance of normal mushrooms too.

Welcome to the year 2010 and a refreshing new blog! 2009 was inarguably an eventful and rocky year. The entertainment industry lost the highly lucrative and amazingly talented Michael Jackson, and an aspiring terrorist lost body tissue in his private areas during a failed attempt to blow a passenger filled Airbus A330 to pieces. Those we should mourn are the thousands of magazines dear to our hearts which had to fold in the midst of the recession. But I’m not about to review and highlight the highs and lows of the previous year because your quota for 2009 flashbacks have most likely been exceeded. Recovering from a two years and 9 month long blogging-hangover I have taken pleasure in a much needed timeout. However, the current weeks have included endless of pondering, brainstorming and reflections over the blog should progress. With all my senses gathered in creative union, I have framed a new voice and image for the blog – just like humans, blogs occasionally need to be revitalised with a new appearance. Depuis mercredi, un mouvement de grève reconductible, à l’appel de l’intersyndicale du ministère de la Culture affecte certains musées et monuments nationaux, afin de protester contre les suppressions d’emplois à venir.Arc de Triomphe

Le Centre Pompidou en grève depuis le 23 novembre tenait une assemblée générale des personnels samedi pour décider de la suite du mouvement. En raison de sa pyramide des âges, il est particulièrement touché par la règle du non-remplacement d’un départ à la retraite sur deux qui s’appliquera aux opérateurs de l’Etat à compter de 2010.

Samedi, le musée du Louvre a ouvert avec deux heures et demi de retard, le temps que se tienne une assemblée générale des personnels qui a reconduit la grève.

Au vu du nombre d’agents non grévistes, la direction du musée du Louvre a décidé d’ouvrir 70% des salles du musée ainsi que les expositions temporaires notamment “Rivalités à Venise”, selon le service de presse.

La direction a constaté que les grévistes “laissaient entrer le public dans le musée, contrairement à ce qui s’était passé jeudi”, a précisé le service de presse.

De son côté, le Château de Versailles, fermé jeudi et vendredi, a ouvert samedi à 10h00, “car il y a peu de grévistes aujourd’hui”, a indiqué à l’AFP le service de presse de l’établissement.

L’Arc de Triomphe est ouvert également samedi, alors qu’il était fermé en journée depuis mercredi, a indiqué le Centre des Monuments Nationaux (CMN).

Les Tours de Notre-Dame sont ouvertes, alors qu’elles avaient été fermées jeudi et vendredi.

En revanche, la Sainte-Chapelle reste fermée depuis mercredi. La Conciergerie est fermée depuis jeudi, selon le CMN.

Les syndicats protestent contre les réductions d’effectifs à venir chez les opérateurs culturels publics, dans le cadre de la révision générale des politiques publiques (RGPP).
