18 and off travelling: should I blow all my cash before uni?

My name is Patrick, I’m 18 and on a gap year. I’ve already done a bit of travelling (to South Africa) but that was last year and now I’ve got a lot of things to sort out for 2010, which means a lot of questions, which I was hoping Citywire readers could help me with.travelling

I’m planning on going to Thailand, India and Vietnam. Obviously its no simple task getting visas – I’ve heard that in some cases you have to get them months in advance depending on where you’re travelling to – can anyone offer any advice on how go about sorting this out?

My budget is enough to cover the two projects I plan to work on, which will cost around £700 each, excluding flights. But I’ll be spending a month in Thailand and the same in Vietnam – how much spending money should I have spare? Are there any rules of thumb for budgeting when travelling in Asia?

Travel insurance is another big one – where is the best to go to get it? Any tips?

I have a few concerns about when I return from travelling, besides the obvious anti-climax of not living in paradise… I go to Uni in September but I’ll be coming back from Asia in early August, so I’ll soon be facing the financial pressures of being a student – is it worth me getting a job to try and recover some cash that I will likely blow during fresher’s week? Or should I just make the most of freedom from studying and working while it lasts?

Lots of questions I know. I’d be interested to get your feedback. And while you’re at it, any tips on where to go in the countries I’m visiting?

SL Fashion | 2010 – The Year of the Mushroom?

Reek did it some time ago with the Reek ‘Bouncing Shrooms’ – a good lot is on display around the Ozimal’s mainstore of course. As far as the new Ozimals SIM goes, it’s mushroom heaven, with a good smattering of mad hatter’s tea party too.World Fashion Concept

Not a completely new concept, as a previous couple of markets for breedable pets were based on the Mad Hatter concept with a few good mushrooms too. And of course – a week before Ozimals opened, the other bunny brand – HunnyBunny opened up it’s own mainstore on the Bunnies SIM – and guess what – the Bunnies sim has a mad hatter tea party table out, and there are quite a few mushrooms to sit on around the SIM and mainstore too.

Then there’s Petable Turtles – who a couple of months back produced a new home object which centralises the roaming on turtles, plus makes them non-physical. Yep – it’s a mushroom. The shroom is completely modifiable, so you don’t have to have a shroom, and mushrooms and turtles do seem an odd mix, whereas bunnies and mushrooms seem to go together. Right?

What is it about breedable pets and mushrooms then? It’s something about fairies, fantasy and animals – there’s something going on with the world where we are moving back to stories, fairytales and fantasy. Perhaps our real lives are harsh – what with the wars and recession, economic and ecological problems. But nowhere can we find this return to fantasy more-so than in our Second Lives, where it’s very easy to do, and acceptable too.

The Ozimals SIM has mushrooms of so many types you’re going to have to visit to see. Many were supplied by Fae & Tiny Fantasy Creations at Rainbow Island, who do a mass of mushrooms, houses and fantastical trees. Previous to that I’d discovered a similar fantasy place -  Fae Faire – which has recently brought out a ‘Cartoon It’ range – those trees, a house, silly furniture and sitting mushrooms look like cartoons, with black borders around their outside. Fae Faire House & Garden has a huge abundance of normal mushrooms too.

See the Louvre, Eiffel Tower and more!

The Eiffel Tower (French: Tour Eiffel, [tuʀ ɛfɛl]) is a 19th century iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris that has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The Eiffel Tower, which is the tallest building in Paris,[10] is the single most visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch for the 1889 World’s Fair.Eiffel

The tower stands at 324 m (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-story building. It was the tallest structure in the world from its completion until 1930, when it was eclipsed by the Chrysler Building in New York City. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France, behind the Millau Viaduct, completed in 2004. And while the Eiffel Tower is a steel structure, and weighs approximately 10,000 tonnes, it actually has a relatively low density, weighing less than a cylinder of air occupying the same dimensions as the tower.

The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend either on stairs or lifts to the first and second levels. The walk to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. The third and highest level is accessible only by lift. Both the first and second levels feature restaurants.

The tower has become the most prominent symbol of both Paris and France. The tower is a featured part of the backdrop in literally scores of movies that take place in Paris. Its iconic status is so established that it even serves as a symbol for the entire nation of France, such as when it was used as the logo for the French bid to host the 1992 Summer Olympics.

I Luw Fashion becomes Berkley Magazine.

Welcome to the year 2010 and a refreshing new blog! 2009 was inarguably an eventful and rocky year. The entertainment industry lost the highly lucrative and amazingly talented Michael Jackson, and an aspiring terrorist lost body tissue in his private areas during a failed attempt to blow a passenger filled Airbus A330 to pieces. Those we should mourn are the thousands of magazines dear to our hearts which had to fold in the midst of the recession. But I’m not about to review and highlight the highs and lows of the previous year because your quota for 2009 flashbacks have most likely been exceeded. Recovering from a two years and 9 month long blogging-hangover I have taken pleasure in a much needed timeout. However, the current weeks have included endless of pondering, brainstorming and reflections over the blog should progress. With all my senses gathered in creative union, I have framed a new voice and image for the blog – just like humans, blogs occasionally need to be revitalised with a new appearance. Long-term readers shall not fear change as the layout and also editorial philosophy of “I Luw Fashion” have been preserved – an evolutionary update.Fashion magazine

Navigation will now be more user-friendly thanks to a search bar for finding posts in the haystack of posts and a thumbnail of the most recent 5 posts which should particularly benefit readers using mobile devices such as the iPhone. In the back-office the blog is now better equipped for the road ahead. A powerful new camera and high-tech cellphone will be used to produce quality photographs and candid pictures for the blog and the new twitter page. Once again, thank you all for tuning during the recess and welcome to what was once “I Luw Fashion”. Visit the blog weekly for an update of the top products that enhance the modern man.

Supermarket pledges 100-job expansion

A SUPERMARKET in Sheffield is planning a big extension which developers say will bring 100 new jobs to the city.

Sainsbury’s has submitted drawings to the council for the project at its store on Archer Road, Millhouses.
supermarket
The company said the plans will increase the size of what is already one of its busiest stores in northern England by about 40 per cent. Staffing will increase from 450 to 550.

The scheme, which has to gain the approval of a Sheffield Council planning board in the new year, includes 66 new parking spaces, better access from Archer Road, a new restaurant and a separate delivery bay.

Sainsbury’s say a customer consultation exercise revealed 71 per cent were in favour of the plans and 16 per cent against.

The chain’s regional development surveyor, Christian Wakelin, said: “The store is very popular and the local community have come to depend upon it.

“The store is now showing its age and it really needs an upgrade if we are to maintain the quality standards and stock availability and variety our customers expecting.

“Local residents and customers have expressed a strong desire for the store to be improved, particularly from an environmental sustainability standpoint.

“The store extension and improvements will provide a better customer experience – better stock levels, more variety of goods, wider aisles, more car parking spaces, enhanced cycle parking facilities and better pedestrian access from Archer Road – and will also create a further 100 jobs in the area.”

The Business of Selling Inexpensive Perfume

Some businesses have a few customers who are, well known to them. For smaller or local businesses, information about their market can be relatively easy to find. This will be through the personal and social contact with their customers. Some businesses, however, must be careful that they do not, misread their customers’ views and actions. Perfume

Other businesses have more, distant relationships with their customers. This is because they have a large number of customers, they need to operate in a range of different markets or market their products in international as well as national markets. For these businesses, market information may be less easy to come by.

A market involves buyers and sellers that come together to exchange goods and services. Markets are in a continuous state of change. As a result, a business is likely to use marketing research on a regular basis for a number of reasons.

A business may wish to identify what is happening in its market. This means that the business may want to find the trends in its sales or to find out the types of customers who are buying a particular product.

Once a business has decided how it wishes to use marketing research data, the next stage is to identify the aspects or areas that it wants to concentrate on. The small case study on, how a designer discount perfume site is, marketed throws light on clever marketing tactics of perfume manufacturers.

‘GLOW’ is marketed by Jennifer Lopez and sold at designer any discount perfume site. It is very appealing and it, also smells very sensual. The advertisement is very interesting as many women would like to be ‘Jennifer Lopez’ this is why the advert would be very appealing to women as this is the perfume that Jennifer Lopez wears. The colours in this advert are mainly shades of gold as this is a colour of wealth and prosperity and the colour denotes the natural goodness. The main picture in this advertisement is of Jennifer Lopez, who has no clothes on but is, covered in sheer gold fabric or material, at the side of the advert is a picture of the perfume bottle whish has a very extravagant look, which is, meant in a way to be the shape of a woman’s body in theory. Whereas the words are very different and quite bold and up front and this describes what the perfume is about, the words are ‘Fresh-Sexy-Clean it’s the GLOW’ this is a type of slogan as it is quite catchy and it tells you what the product is about in a way. This creates the image that it is not, inexpensive perfume.

This type of clever advertisements lures the customers who want to emulate their favourite icon. The trick used by manufacturers to lure the elite group of customers is by sending the message that the perfume marketed by them is, not an inexpensive perfume. The customers on their part fall for the bait of their favourite icon and end up buying the perfume.
